Can ChatGPT watch YouTube videos?
No. Paste a YouTube link into a chat and ChatGPT doesn't play the video or hear it: what it works with is the transcript, as text. The two exceptions are a video file you upload yourself and OpenAI's browser extension, which only reads captions, so a video with no captions stays out of reach either way.
Below: why the link doesn't work, the method that does, what uploading a file really gets you, and what to do when the video has no captions.
Why can't ChatGPT open a YouTube link?
A YouTube URL isn't a video file. It's a web page with a player embedded in it. A Zapier expert made the same point to a user in 2023: tools that expect a file need a direct download link, not a YouTube page.
OpenAI's help documents what ChatGPT can take in: documents, spreadsheets, images, audio files, video files and web search. It documents no way to read a video's speech from a link pasted into a chat. The only YouTube feature it documents is the browser extension, covered below.
So if ChatGPT answers anyway, test it. Ask for an exact quote with its timestamp. If it can't give one, it didn't hear the video.
How do you get ChatGPT to watch a YouTube video?
You give it the words. YouTube's help says you can see the full transcript of any video that has captions. On a computer:
- Open the video on YouTube.
- In the video description, click Show transcript.
- Select the whole transcript and copy it.
- Paste it into ChatGPT, then ask your question: a summary, study notes, the three steps the speaker gave.
- For a long video, save the text as a
.txtfile and attach it instead. OpenAI caps text files at 2 million tokens per file.
Pasted text works on any ChatGPT plan. This method also answers the question behind most searches: ChatGPT can summarize a YouTube video, as long as you hand it the transcript.
Can you upload a YouTube video to ChatGPT?
You can upload a video file, which is not the same thing as a link. OpenAI's help says ChatGPT accepts video attachments, Free plan included, depending on platform, upload method and account.
OpenAI is careful about the result, though. Its help says the analysis “can be incomplete or inaccurate” and that ChatGPT “may not analyze the entire video or accurately interpret its audio.” Videos also count toward your plan's upload limits.
Then there's getting the file. Your own videos download from YouTube Studio. Someone else's video is another matter: YouTube's terms are summed up in the guide on how to get a transcript of a YouTube video without captions.
Can ChatGPT transcribe a YouTube video?
Not from the link. From a file, it depends on the file.
- An audio file. ChatGPT transcribes audio uploads, up to 512 MB. But audio uploads are for paid plans only, “not available on the Free plan at this time.” Very long recordings may time out, and accuracy varies across languages.
- A video file. This is where OpenAI warns the audio may not be interpreted accurately. For a word-for-word transcript, a video file is the weaker starting point.
What about the ChatGPT browser extension?
It's the closest thing to “ChatGPT watching YouTube”. It works with the ChatGPT desktop app, in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi. You open a YouTube video and ask about it in the side chat, which Opera doesn't have. OpenAI says availability depends on rollout and workspace settings.
Read the condition, though: “When captions are available, ChatGPT can use the video's timestamped transcript.” It automates the copy-paste method. It doesn't listen. A video with no captions gives it nothing to read.
Is there a free option without ChatGPT?
On some videos, YouTube has its own Ask button below the player. You pick a suggested prompt or type a question. YouTube's help limits it to signed-in users aged 13 or over, in select countries and languages, and to “select videos”. Its answers come from language models that draw on YouTube and the web, and YouTube warns they may be inaccurate. No button under your video? Use the transcript method.
What do the top results get wrong?
“ChatGPT cannot process video files.” LilysAI's guide, ranking on this query, says so in its FAQ. OpenAI's help says the opposite: video files are accepted, Free plan included. What's true is that the analysis may be partial, especially the audio.
A smaller point. An Exemplary AI guide, updated September 2026, gives a 512 MB cap for video uploads. OpenAI's current help gives 512 MB for audio and documents, but its answer on video names no figure, only that videos count toward upload limits. Don't plan around a precise size for video.
What if the video has no captions?
Then every route above stops at the same wall. No captions means no Show transcript, nothing for the extension to read, and no text to paste. ChatGPT is waiting for words that YouTube doesn't have.
Free ways to make the words yourself exist: your computer's live captions, or Whisper running on your own machine. Both are in the no-captions guide, with their limits. If the transcript button itself is missing on a video that has captions, see YouTube transcript not showing.
No captions, no time to set up Whisper, and you need the text in ChatGPT today? That's the case I built Transcript Any Video for. You paste the YouTube link, and it transcribes the video's audio, not its captions, so it works on videos that have none. You get it word for word, with just your email, no password. Videos can run up to 2 hours. You buy credits once, 10 for $1.99, no subscription, and you get a refund if the transcript is wrong. Then paste the text into ChatGPT.
FAQ
How do I get the transcript of a YouTube video with ChatGPT?
You bring the transcript, ChatGPT tidies it. Paste the raw text from YouTube and ask it to remove the timestamps and split the text into paragraphs. Tell it to keep every word as spoken, so the clean-up doesn't turn into a rewrite.
Can ChatGPT summarize a YouTube video?
Yes, once it has the text. Ask it to put a timestamp next to each point of the summary. In YouTube's transcript panel, clicking a line jumps to that moment in the video, so you can check any point in a few seconds.
Are YouTube's automatic captions accurate enough for ChatGPT?
Often, not always. YouTube's help says automatic captions might misrepresent what was said because of mispronunciations, accents, dialects or background noise. ChatGPT can't tell a misheard word from a real one, so a wrong product name in the captions stays wrong in the summary.
Can I show ChatGPT a video on my phone?
The ChatGPT app has live camera video and screen sharing in Voice. OpenAI lists them as separate features, with their own availability and limits. Use them for a quick question about what's on screen. For notes you'll reuse, the transcript method leaves you with text.
