What AI can watch YouTube videos?
Two can take a YouTube video as it is and answer questions about it: YouTube's own Ask button, on select videos, and Google's Gemini. ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Perplexity and DeepSeek don't document opening a YouTube link; they work from a transcript you give them, and some of them can transcribe a video file you upload.
Below: what “watch” really means for an AI, what each assistant does with a video, a quick test to see which one you're dealing with, and what to do when the video has no captions.
What does “watch” mean for an AI?
Three different things hide behind the word.
- Reading the captions. The AI gets the video's transcript as text. This is what most tools do. No captions, no text.
- Hearing the audio. The AI, or a tool next to it, turns the speech into text. This works on videos without captions.
- Seeing the frames. The AI looks at still images from the video: slides, code, a chart. Rare, and the only one that is close to watching.
Most “AI that watches YouTube” pages don't say which of the three they do. That is the first thing to find out.
Is there an AI that watches YouTube videos and answers questions?
Yes, inside YouTube. On some videos, an Ask button sits on the watch page. YouTube's help says you can ask questions about the video you're watching, or pick a suggested prompt. It runs on Android, iOS, computer browsers and smart TVs.
The conditions are strict. You must be signed in, meet the minimum age, and be in a supported country and language. It isn't available on supervised kid accounts, and it appears only “for select videos.” YouTube adds that the answers come from language models that “draw on info from YouTube and the web”, and may be inaccurate. If a reply is off, the thumbs down is how you tell YouTube.
Can ChatGPT or Claude watch YouTube videos?
Not from a link in a chat. Both work from the transcript. ChatGPT's browser extension reads a video's captions when they exist, and ChatGPT accepts uploaded video files, with OpenAI warning the audio may be misread. The full picture, with the steps, is in Can ChatGPT watch YouTube videos?
Claude takes no video or audio files at all. Claude in Chrome reads the YouTube page, and developer tools for Claude Code go further. All of it is in Can Claude watch YouTube videos?
Can Grok watch YouTube videos?
xAI's Grok FAQ lists MP4 and MOV among the files you can upload in the Grok apps. It says nothing about YouTube links.
Tutorials show people trying anyway. Komet Media's one-minute guide has you paste a link with the prompt “Summarize this YouTube Video” and get a summary back. It never says where that summary comes from: the audio, the captions, or pages about the video.
A test from March 2025 went the other way. Asked for a transcript, Grok 3 replied: “I cannot produce a transcript from a video, period.” That test is old and was run on Grok 3. Run the check below on your own video before you rely on a Grok summary.
Can Perplexity watch YouTube videos?
Perplexity's help covers video files, not links. Upload an MP4, MOV, WebM or another listed format, and it “will automatically transcribe the spoken content into text.” It can even label who said what.
Two limits. “Visual scenes from video files aren't indexed or searchable at this time”, so it hears the video but doesn't see it. And every file is capped at 40 MB. On a pasted YouTube link, the help says nothing.
Uploading means downloading the video first. For someone else's video, YouTube's terms apply: they're summed up in the guide on how to get a transcript of a YouTube video without captions.
What about Gemini?
Google's help says you can ask Gemini about YouTube videos, and that it “uses public information from YouTube” to answer. You must be signed in, with Activity turned on. Several tools that rank on this query run on it: the YouTube skill on learnaiwithmariah.com, for Claude and Codex, passes the link to Gemini. Sources disagree on what Gemini does with a video that has no captions, so Gemini gets its own guide: Can Gemini watch YouTube videos?
How do you check whether an AI really watched the video?
A fluent summary proves nothing. Five minutes on a video you know will tell you more.
- Pick a video you've seen, and note one sentence the speaker says at a precise minute.
- Ask the AI what is said at that minute, word for word. An answer built from the title or the description can't give it.
- Ask what is on screen at the same minute: the slide, the code, the chart. Only an AI that reads frames can answer.
- Repeat on a video with no captions, where Show transcript is missing. If the AI still quotes the speaker, it heard the audio.
- Check each quote against the video. A quote that isn't there means the AI filled the gap.
What do the top results leave out?
Today's results are tools, a Reddit thread, a Quora question, a YouTube tutorial and a few articles. None compares the assistants. Memories.ai's YouTube analyzer promises answers with timestamps but never says whether they come from frames, captions or audio. Monica's summarizer is “powered by GPT”, gives new users two free summaries, and says nothing about videos without captions. The guide on learnaiwithmariah.com is the clearest: it says Claude and ChatGPT “cannot watch video”, and its fix depends on Gemini.
What if the video has no captions?
Then every route that reads text stops. No captions means no transcript for YouTube's panel, for ChatGPT's extension or for Claude in Chrome. What's left is a route that hears the audio: a video file uploaded to Grok, Perplexity or ChatGPT, or Whisper running on your own computer. The Whisper route, with its limits, is in Transcribe YouTube audio. If the transcript button is missing on a video that does have captions, see YouTube transcript not showing.
No captions, no file to upload, and your AI needs the words today? That's the case I built Transcript Any Video for. You paste the YouTube link, and it transcribes the video's audio, not its captions, so it works on videos that have none. You get it word for word, in 57 languages, with just your email, no password. Videos can run up to 2 hours. You buy credits once, 10 for $1.99, no subscription, and you get a refund if the transcript is wrong. Then paste the text into whichever assistant you use.
FAQ
Can DeepSeek watch YouTube videos?
Nothing in DeepSeek's documentation says so. Its vision guide lists four image formats, JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP, and mentions no video or audio input. To work on a video with DeepSeek, paste the transcript as text.
Can Grok transcribe a YouTube video?
From a file, xAI says it can “transcribe and interpret audio/video”, with most files allowed up to 150 MB. It also warns that some audio and video files upload fine “but have variable transcription quality.” From a YouTube link, its FAQ says nothing.
Can an AI see what's on screen, not just what's said?
Few do it on a video. Perplexity's help says visual scenes from uploaded videos “aren't indexed or searchable at this time.” If you need one slide or one line of code, take a screenshot of that moment and upload it as an image. Claude and ChatGPT take images, and so does DeepSeek's API.
Why would an AI summarize a video it never watched?
A link carries a title, and the web often has pages about the video. Even YouTube says the models behind its own Ask feature “draw on info from YouTube and the web” and may produce inaccurate information. A summary built that way can sound right and still miss what the speaker said.
