Why are captions not available on this YouTube video?

If captions are missing on one YouTube video but work on others, the problem is that video, not your browser: YouTube hasn't made automatic captions for it yet, can't make them, or the creator took them down. You can still follow it for free with the live captions built into Chrome, Windows, Android and iPhone, which listen to the sound as it plays.

Here's how to tell which case you're in, and what each one leaves you.

Auto captions not working on every video, or just this one?

Most fixes you'll find for this search tell you to clear your cache, open an incognito window or reset Chrome. Those only help when captions are broken everywhere. Check that first:

  1. Open a video you know has captions, one you've watched with CC before, and turn CC on.
  2. If captions fail there too, the problem is your app or browser. Clear the cache, try an incognito window, update or reinstall the app. That's what the top videos for this search walk through.
  3. If captions work there, go back to your video. Click the gear icon, then Subtitles/CC. No language to pick, or a greyed-out CC button, means subtitles are not available for this video: it has no caption track.

That last case is the one this page is about. Captions work but the transcript panel is gone? That's a different problem, covered in this guide to a YouTube transcript not showing.

Why does YouTube have no automatic captions for this video?

YouTube lists the reasons automatic captions don't appear:

The same help page adds two cases. On a live stream, automatic captions are English only, need normal latency, and are still rolling out to channels with more than 1,000 subscribers. On a video with several audio tracks, they only cover the default language.

Captions can also be taken away. YouTube lets a creator delete a caption track completely from YouTube Studio. And some creators upload their own captions instead of relying on automatic ones. As one viewer on r/hardofhearing noticed, those don't always go up at the same time as the video.

Will the captions show up if I wait?

Only in the first case. YouTube says automatic captions may not be ready when a video is uploaded, and that processing time depends on how complex the audio is. It gives no fixed delay.

Viewers who rely on captions have their own rules. On r/hardofhearing, one gives a video less than an hour old a few more hours. Another retries anything watched within 24 hours of release, and sees it often with late-night shows.

If the video is older than that, waiting probably won't help. None of the other reasons on YouTube's list goes away with time.

Can I get the creator to turn captions on?

You can ask. Viewers in the same thread leave a comment saying captions are missing, then come back if the creator fixes it. Others report the video. One says YouTube emailed three weeks later to say it had reached out to the uploader, who never answered.

If it's your own video, YouTube's list above is your checklist. Its help page on automatic captioning is written for creators.

How to read along anyway, for free

Your device can caption any audio it plays, a YouTube video included. These tools listen to the sound, so they work even when YouTube has no caption track.

On r/hardofhearing, these are the answers that come up again and again: Chrome's Live Caption, Windows live captions, the phone's own captions, or Google's Live Transcribe on their phone.

The catch: nothing is kept

Live captions are for reading at the speed of the video. Google says Chrome and Android captions are never stored. Microsoft says Windows doesn't store them anywhere, on the device or in the cloud. So you can't search them, copy a quote, or reread the talk tomorrow.

What if you need the text itself?

Then you need a transcript made from the audio. Most transcript sites can't help here. They copy YouTube's caption track, so a video with no captions gives them nothing. When I tested a video with no captions on October 7, 2026, youtube-transcript.io and NotebookLM both failed on it.

The free route is Whisper, run on your own computer. This guide on how to get a transcript of a YouTube video without captions walks through it, including when a Whisper transcript can't be trusted.

No captions, and no time to set up Whisper? That's the case I built Transcript Any Video for. You paste the YouTube link, and it transcribes the audio, not the captions. You get it word for word, with just your email, no password. Videos can run up to 2 hours. You buy credits once, 10 for $1.99, no subscription, and you can ask for a refund if the transcript is wrong or incomplete.

FAQ

Are YouTube's automatic captions accurate?

Not always. YouTube says they come from machine learning, so quality varies, and they can get words wrong because of mispronunciations, accents, dialects or background noise. YouTube asks creators to review them and fix what's wrong.

Why do automatic captions leave some words out?

By default, automatic captions can hide words YouTube considers potentially inappropriate. The setting is called "Don't show potentially inappropriate words". It lives in the creator's YouTube Studio, under Settings, Channel, Advanced settings, not in the player.

Do live captions send the video's audio to Google or Microsoft?

No. Chrome, Android and Windows all say the audio is processed on your device and never leaves it. One exception: Live Translate in Chrome sends the captions to Google so they can be translated.
