Why is the YouTube transcript not working?

When the YouTube transcript is not working, it's one of two problems. Either the panel opens but stays blank or keeps loading, which usually comes from your browser, an extension or a YouTube glitch. Or a tool outside YouTube, like NotebookLM, an extension or an automation, can't read the video's captions and says there is no transcript.

Both can be fixed for free, as long as the video has captions. Start with the 10-second check below.

First: does the video have captions?

YouTube builds the transcript from the caption track. Its help page says you can see the full transcript of any video that has captions. So play the video and click the CC button in the player.

Text appears on the video? A caption track exists, and the transcript can be fixed. No CC button, or CC shows nothing? Nothing on this page will bring text back: skip to the last section.

No “Show transcript” button at all in the description? That's a different problem, covered in the guide to a YouTube transcript not showing.

YouTube transcript not loading: the panel opens but stays blank

The captions exist, the page just doesn't get them. Try these in order, on the same video:

  1. Close the description and open it again. In a 2023 r/youtube thread, someone saw “Transcripts have moved to the description” with nothing there. The top answer: click “Show less”, then “more”, and the transcript appears.
  2. Hard reload the page. Press Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac.
  3. Open the link in a private or incognito window. Extensions and stored data don't follow you there. If the transcript loads, one of them is the cause.
  4. Turn off your ad blocker for YouTube only. YouTube's own help warns that extensions that block ads may affect video playback. Click the blocker's icon, pick the option that turns it off on this site, then reload.
  5. Try another browser. In February 2026, a user of r3dfox, a browser built on Firefox, couldn't load any transcript while the same videos worked in Chrome. It cleared up in early March, when YouTube rolled out a new transcript panel.
  6. Switch networks. School and work networks, and some countries, restrict parts of YouTube. Turning off Wi-Fi and using mobile data is a quick test.

Still blank on every video, in every browser, on two networks? Then the problem is probably on YouTube's side. Wait and try again later.

Why does the transcript look different, or show the wrong language?

YouTube changed the transcript panel in late February and early March 2026. On some videos the text is much larger, and the three-dot menu for timestamps and the language button are gone. Users on the Readlang forum describe it on Chrome and Edge, on PC and Android.

Two side effects show up when you copy the text:

You didn't break a setting. If you need clean text, paste it into an editor and strip the timestamps, or ask an AI chat to do it.

Why does NotebookLM say the transcript isn't available?

NotebookLM doesn't listen to the video. Its help pages, now titled Gemini Notebook Help, say it imports only the text transcript, and only from public YouTube videos with captions. They list the most common reasons an import fails:

Two more limits apply. Videos uploaded less than 72 hours ago may not import, and videos without speech aren't supported. So a brand-new upload can fail today and work in three days.

What NotebookLM does with a video once the import works, and what it never sees, is in the guide to the NotebookLM YouTube transcript.

What works now:

  1. If YouTube shows a transcript, copy it from the panel and add it to NotebookLM as copied text instead of a link.
  2. If it's your own video, upload its audio file instead. NotebookLM transcribes audio files when you import them.
  3. If the video has no captions, the link import will keep failing. See the last section.

One guide near the top of this search, from VidNotes, sends you to a three-dot menu next to the title to find “Show transcript”. That path is out of date: YouTube's help now puts the button in the video description.

Your extension, script or automation returns nothing

Transcript grabbers read the same caption track as the panel. When YouTube changes how it serves that track, they break, often all at once:

What to do:

  1. Update the extension or tool, then check its forum or changelog for a known breakage.
  2. Open the same video in YouTube's own panel. If the transcript loads there, the tool is broken, not the video.
  3. Copy the transcript from the panel by hand while you wait for a fix. That happens inside your own browser, where YouTube's player creates the token itself.

What if the video has no captions at all?

Then no panel, extension or NotebookLM import will find text, because there is none to copy. You need a transcript made from the audio. The free route is Whisper, run on your own computer. This guide on how to get a transcript of a YouTube video without captions walks through it, including when a Whisper transcript can't be trusted.

No captions, and no time to set up Whisper? That's the case I built Transcript Any Video for. You paste the YouTube link, and it transcribes the audio, not the captions. You get it word for word, with just your email, no password. Videos can run up to 2 hours. You buy credits once, 10 for $1.99, no subscription, and you can ask for a refund if the transcript is wrong or incomplete.

FAQ

Does NotebookLM work with private YouTube videos?

No. Its help page says only public YouTube videos are supported. If a video you already added is later deleted or made private, NotebookLM removes that source from your notebook within 30 days.

Is there a length limit when NotebookLM imports a YouTube video?

Not on the video itself. The only limit is the caption file: it can't contain more than 500,000 words. Length alone won't make a long lecture fail.

Why does a transcript tool work on one video and fail on the next?

YouTube applies its token requirement video by video, so the same tool can work on one and come back blank on another. A blank result often looks exactly like “no captions”, with no error to tell them apart. Check the video's CC button before you blame the tool.
