How to summarize a YouTube video without subtitles
Turn the audio into text first, then summarize that text. Almost every YouTube summarizer reads the video's captions, so a video without subtitles leaves it nothing to read; the free ways around that are Gemini on the link, NotebookLM on your own video's audio, or a transcript of the audio pasted into any AI chat.
Below: how to confirm the video really has none, why most tools fail on it, each free route step by step, and the two checks that matter on a long lecture.
Does the video really have no subtitles?
Check before you spend time on a workaround. YouTube Help says you can see the full transcript of any video that has captions: in the description, click Show transcript. No button there, and no CC button on the player, means no captions. YT Summarizer's September 2026 guide still sends you to a three-dot menu under the video; YouTube's help now puts the button in the description. On a phone or an iPad it's elsewhere, see how to see transcript on YouTube.
A missing transcript isn't always for good. YouTube lists reasons automatic captions don't appear: the audio is still being processed, the language isn't supported, the video is too long, the sound is poor, a long silence opens the video, or several people talk over each other. On a video uploaded today, waiting can be the free fix. What each reason means is in YouTube automatic captions not available.
Why do most YouTube summarizers fail on these videos?
Because they summarize text, and the text they use is the caption track. Mindgrasp, first on this search, says its AI “processes the video's transcript”. NotebookLM's help is explicit: only public videos with captions are supported, and only the text transcript is imported. YT Summarizer's guide puts it plainly: “Almost every YouTube summarizer reads the caption track.”
A few tools say they listen to the audio. NoteGPT promises key points “from videos up to 150 minutes even if they have no subtitles”, while the same page says you can summarize videos “of any length”. TubeOnAI says it transcribes the audio when captions are missing. Test any of them on your video before you pay. A summary is real only if it holds something the speaker said that isn't in the title or the description.
How to summarize a YouTube video without a transcript, for free
Pick the route that matches your video.
Route 1: paste the link into Gemini
- Open Gemini and paste the YouTube link.
- Ask for a summary, each point with its timestamp.
- Jump to two of those timestamps and listen.
Google's developer docs say Gemini models process the video's audio and sample one frame per second, and the free API tier takes up to 8 hours of YouTube video a day. What the Gemini app does with a video that has no captions isn't documented, so step 3 isn't optional. More in can Gemini watch YouTube videos.
Route 2: it's your own video
- Download it. YouTube Help says you can get an MP4 of videos you uploaded, in 720p or 360p.
- Upload the file to NotebookLM as a source. MP4, MP3, M4A and WAV are all on its list of audio types, and the file “is transcribed at the time of import”.
- Ask for the summary in the chat.
Audio with no speech isn't supported, and low-quality audio can make the import fail.
Route 3: it's someone else's video
- Get the words from the audio. The free ways are your computer's live captions or Whisper, OpenAI's open-source speech recognition model, which you install on your own machine. Both, and what YouTube's terms allow, are in how to get a transcript of a YouTube video without captions.
- Paste the text into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or NotebookLM as copied text.
- Give it a shape, not just “summarize”. For example:
Summarize this transcript for someone who won't watch the video.
Main points in order, each starting with its timestamp.
Then list what the speaker claims without explaining.
Use only what is in the transcript.
Is there an AI that can summarize YouTube videos?
Yes, of two kinds. Most read the captions, which is why they all fail on the same videos. A few hear the audio: Gemini, according to Google's docs, and the tools that transcribe first. YouTube's own Ask button covers select videos only; if it isn't there, see YouTube Ask button missing. What ChatGPT, Claude and the others do with a link is in what AI can watch YouTube videos.
How do you summarize a long YouTube video?
Length breaks summaries in two ways. The tool refuses the video, or it takes it and the summary thins out after the first part. The limits differ from tool to tool. NotebookLM imports a captioned video of any length unless its caption file tops 500,000 words. NoteGPT names 150 minutes for videos without subtitles. The free Gemini API stops at 8 hours of YouTube a day.
Two checks catch a cut summary:
- Look at the last timestamp. If the video runs two hours and the summary stops at minute 50, the end was dropped.
- Ask for the missing part on its own, for example “Summarize from 1:00:00 to the end.” Chapters, when the video has them, give you natural places to cut.
Can you trust a summary made from the audio?
Mostly, but check the parts you'll act on. YouTube warns that its automatic captions “might misrepresent the spoken content due to mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise”. Whisper's README says its performance “varies widely depending on the language”. Then the summary adds its own errors: in an r/PKMS test of free summarizers, the tester found “an obvious mistake in the summary” from one of them. Names, figures and steps are where it hurts. Find them at their timestamp before you quote them.
No captions, no own copy of the video, and no time to set up Whisper? That's the case I built Transcript Any Video for. Its Chrome extension opens the transcript beside the video, on YouTube. When the video has no captions, it transcribes the audio, up to 2 hours. The same credit covers an AI pass over the whole text, from your own instruction, written in the language you choose, each point linked to its minute, up to 6 times on the same video. Be aware it pulls out the advice the speaker gives rather than writing a neutral summary; for a classic summary, copy the text into the chat you already use. Ten credits cost $1.99, paid once, and they never expire. A video with captions costs 1 credit whatever its length; without captions, 1 credit for each 30 minutes started. No subscription, and refunds are possible.
FAQ
Is there a way to summarize a YouTube video?
Yes, and a video with captions is the easy case. Open Show transcript, copy the text, and paste it into any AI chat, or use YouTube's own Ask button where it appears. Only videos with no captions need the audio step.
How do I summarize a YouTube lecture for study notes?
Ask for structure, not length: the definitions, the worked examples, and what the lecturer says will be on the exam, each with its timestamp. A transcript only holds what was said, so slides and board work are missing. When the lecturer says "as you can see here", pause at that minute and take a screenshot.
Can I get the summary in a different language from the video?
Yes. Any AI chat will write it in the language you ask for. The weak point is the text underneath: if YouTube guessed the wrong language for the captions, the summary is built on wrong words. How to spot and fix that is in the guide on changing the transcript language.
